Artist's Comments

The first place in "Traditional-Artists" 's :icontraditional-artists: "Fairy Tales Contest"

*watercolours, colour pencils, watercolour papers (Canson Arches 140 HP)*

This work is inspired by a chinese fairytale called <落花島> (The Isle of Falling Petals) : Once upon a time, there is an island which is full of fallen flower petals, and there lives a beautiful fairy, she has been watching the human world for more than a thousand years...

Each fallen petal represents the heart-felt story of human love, or loss. The beautiful fairy somehow takes the petals and brings forth hope, consolation and blessing on the humans.

Now, she is observing the destinies of us, maybe she is indulging in reveries...

忽聞海上有仙山, 山在虛無飄渺間.
樓閣玲瓏五雲起, 其中綽越多仙子.
中有一人字太真, 雪膚花貌參差是.

I will have to admit that I've been searching my rusted memory bank for one such legend. Heaven knows, my memory is no longer like what it was just a few years ago. Maybe you can help me to remember?

I do think, however, that you've done a wonderful job with this piece. Those in the DA community use "favourites" to express their appreciationg for a piece. To have earned 4 favourites in 2 days is quite a feat! If nothing else, it shows you that the community appreciates your talent, and quite a talent you have here!

Very well done over all (with the possible exception of the position of her knees, but that's still a minor detail). I think the community will be very happy to have someone like you joining its ranks.

The fact is, it's not from a famous legend~XDDD...it's from 清代長白浩歌子的《螢窗異草》, the original story is called <落花島>, there is a beautiful phrase"落花島中花倒落. 垂柳堤畔柳低垂"...my inspiration is from there, but not exactly the same.

Again, thank you so much for the compliments and the encouragements~ Perhaps, the people in this community quite appreciates some works in antique chinese style? (though I prefer the european style more :b)

But you're right... I've been searching my memory bank ever since you mentioned "famous legend"... my god, I thought I was losing (whatever little that's left of) my mind!

We are always fascinated by what we do not fully understand. The air of mystery and romance cloud our senses and allows us to see everything through a filtered lens. That is why the Occidental is eternally fascinated by what is strange and beautiful about the Orientals and vice versa. Despite that, the community has spoken... they like what you're doing, no doubt about it.

Are they 仿迴文詩體? The fact is, I don't know!! XDDDDD

It's really my pleasure to know you!^^

Thank you for your encouragement so that I am more confident!

P.S. You wrote "traditional chinese characters" here, but you wrote "Simplified characters" in "baidu chat bars"...you are familiar with both characters? (@.@)
:iconsinistrosephosphate:

You're more than welcome! Technically (in my mind, at least), I am the "senpai" in deviantArt (I also think I'm a few years older than you are?), I consider it my job and my pride to be able to encourage younger artists to come here and shine. I'm no real artist, the least I can do is give the spotlight to those who are.

To answer your question:
Well... I could read both sets of Chinese characters, but I was educated in the traditional set. Given a choice, the traditional is how I write (both on-line and by hand). However, since Baidu is a China-run website, it has a sanction against traditional characters. Anyone typing traditional in the chat bars gets automatically translated into the simplified version. I don't mind it, really... but it can be confusing to some people.

This is so beautiful. I don't have any more to say as I am more inclined to stare.
